Tony Wright to stand down

Cannock Chase MP Tony Wright announced he will stand down at next GE because of health fears.

In 2004 he revealed that he was battling chronic leukaemia and kidney disease.
Announcing his decision, he said:

"The uncertainties about my future health make it sensible for me to decide now to stand down from the Commons at the next election. I hope to remain an active member of Parliament until then.”

He was first elected to the Commons in 1992 when he gained Cannock and Burntwood from the Tories. Since 1997 he has represted the Cannock Chase constituency. In 2005 he won the seat with a 21.4% majority.

Re: Tony Wright to stand down (#1)

Tony Wright is someone for whom I have great respect. He is a decent, thoughtful and able MP who has been an excellent chair of the Public Administration cttee - he will be a sad loss to parliament and especially to the PLP.

Will Cannock Chase have an AWS? If not then as someone who lives less that 10 miles from the CLP boundary I would seriously consider putting myself forward as his potential successor.

Re: Tony Wright to stand down (#2)

As an officer of Cannock Chase CLP i would like to bring you upto date with what will be happening for the selection of our parliamentry candidate.

Our Executive will be meeting the regional director on Friday September 12th, to be followed by an all party member meeting on September 19th, These meetings will be to set out the best way forward. I believe that the views that are expressed at these meetings will be then presented to the NEC.

I will post more information as and when i get it.

The opinion of the majority of the active members of the constituency is against an all women shortlist, but infavour of a 50/50 split between men and women.

Re: Tony Wright to stand down (#3)

I believe has has been a very good MP, respected in all parties, and a fine public servant. If it should get to the point where he needs to stand down before the GE he should be allowed to do so.  There are many things are more important than party politics.
